Hidden Heroes records the lives of some of the many remarkable women who have been a vital part of the Adelaide Lithuanian Community. Seventy-three women's stories are told; from the war hero, the homemakers, nurses, doctors, teachers and patriots.
Discover what motivated and inspired them to volunteer for the community. Hidden Heroes also include the history of the women's groups formed in Adelaide. As their stories are uncovered, we realise they are more than just women; they are the heroes in our community's history and they shall no longer be hidden.
About the editors
Born in Adelaide to Lithuanian parents, Birutė has been active in the Adelaide Lithuanian community from a young age. Her teaching job took her to remote parts of South Australia. Returning to Adelaide she taught adults computing technology for the remainder of her career. Now retired, Birutė volunteers for the Australian Lithuanian Archive, embroiders and loves to travel.
The eldest of seven, Jūratė grew up in Adelaide. With her siblings, she participated in many of the Adelaide Lithuanian community groups, from scouts, sport to youth. She entered the Commonwealth Public Service in 1971 working in Adelaide, overseas and in Canberra for many years before returning to Adelaide. With an amazing memory for names and dates Jūratė has no trouble identifying photographs as a volunteer for the Australian Lithuanian Archive. Her love of politics and current affairs keeps any conversation with her engaging one.
A self confessed book worm who grew up in the capital of Lithuania, Edita is a recent arrival to Australia. A love of plants, saw her complete a Bachelor's degree in Biology and Master's degree in Botany at Vilnius University. After graduation, Edita worked as a botanist in the Department of Botany and Genetics at Vilnius University for 22 years. Now in Adelaide, Edita's language skills are invaluable to the Australian Lithuanian Archive where she volunteers. She is active in the Adelaide Lithuanian community, as a member of the governing committee, newspaper editor, folk dancer and radio presenter.
Growing up in the Adelaide Lithuanian community, Daina resented going to Lithuanian language weekend school, but now acknowledges it was a valuable experience. A passionate historian and genealogist, Daina spends her spare time doing what she does for work; history. With a particular interest in the history of the Australian Lithuanian community and a trained archivist she is perfect suited to be the honorary Archivist for the Australian Lithuanian Archive.
