Latvian Flavours (Third Edition) is a heartfelt collection of traditional Latvian recipes, carefully compiled by volunteers from the Latvian Association of South Australia. This cookbook is much more than a simple recipe collection—it is a tribute to the rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions of the Latvian community in Australia. It was born from the desire to preserve treasured family recipes, many of which were at risk of being lost as they were passed down through generations without written documentation.

 

The Latvian Association began by sharing recipes among its members, and this soon grew into regular cooking classes. These classes not only taught how to prepare traditional Latvian dishes but also focused on the history, cultural significance, and stories behind each recipe. This unique approach has helped maintain the connection between food and heritage, ensuring that these recipes remain an integral part of Latvian identity.

 

Now in its third edition, Latvian Flavours continues to be a cherished resource within the Latvian community, particularly among Adelaide-based Latvians. This edition covers the cuisine associated with important cultural events from July to December, including Miķeļdiena (the autumn harvest festival), Mārtiņdienas (a traditional festival celebrating the end of autumn and the beginning of winter), and Christmas. Each recipe is tied to these festive occasions, offering insight into the food traditions that accompany them.
