Pavāru māja (Chefs’ House) is a Michelin Green Star restaurant located in Līgatne, Latvia. This is the story of one man’s passion for sustainable cooking, and the magical transformation of a building
that was once a maternity hospital. 
 
“It is a gift to us and a gift to Latvia,” says Ēriks Dreibants, owner of Pavāru Māja in Līgatne, about the freshly printed book. The book is a tribute both to Pavāru Māja itself and to the people behind it—from chefs and growers to designers and architects. Inside, readers will also discover the guests’ favorite recipes from Pavāru Māja.
 
“Culinary art may be the most fleeting of all the arts,” explains chef and owner Ēriks Dreibants when speaking about the idea behind the book. “That is precisely why we wanted to preserve this art in the form of a book. It is not a traditional cookbook, although it does contain recipes. Guests often ask us how to recreate dishes they’ve enjoyed in the restaurant. In this book, we reveal the ingredients of their favorite dishes and wish them luck in trying them at home. But the moment a dish is served is the true culmination—what remains unseen are the countless hours of hard work by the chefs to arrive at the perfect balance of flavors.”
 
Alongside recipes and stunning, inspiring photography, the book also shares stories about the people whose produce the Pavāru Māja chefs transform into extraordinary dishes. High-quality ingredients are just as essential as the cooking process itself, which is why growers, producers, and fishermen are given special recognition. The book also honors the architects, designers, and artisans whose creations can be seen and experienced every day at Pavāru Māja.
 
Equally important is the place itself—Līgatne, where Pavāru Māja is located, and the building that once served as a maternity hospital and later, during the Soviet era, as the town’s clinic. For this reason, a large part of the book is dedicated to Līgatne, celebrating its cultural, historical, and natural treasures.
